For the second year in a row, on September 22 ““Ventspils nafta” termināls” (VNT) received an award in the competition “Bicycle Friendly” from the Ministry Environmental Protection and Regional Development and the European Commission. VNT has earned the award named “Bicycle Traffic and Bicycle Culture Promoting Organisation” owing to the set of activities taken to promote employees getting around by bicycle safely and comfortably both in the company’s territory and outside it.

Last year the award was received due to acquisition of special industrial bicycles for moving around the company’s territory of 100 hectares. In turn, this year the project was developed further, by promoting usage of bicycles both at work and outside it. For example, within “Bike to Work” campaign the company gave kilometre counters to employees, if they arrive to work by bike on the date of the campaign. Next year, tricycles will be available for safer journeys also in winter, as well as new bicycles will be purchased and additional bicycle racks and shelters will be installed.

The competition “Bicycle Friendly” takes place for the second year. Its goal is to highlight examples of good practice in creating cycling friendly infrastructure, as well as in promoting cycling tourism, and to share the good experience in organising cycling events. Municipalities, institutions and non-governmental organisations were welcome to participate in this competition.

The competition “Bicycle Friendly” is organised by the Ministry of Environmental and Regional Development upon the “Smart Move” initiative of the European Commission in cooperation with the Latvian Cyclists Association, the Zero Emission Mobility Support Association, the Road Traffic Safety Directorate, Ministry of transport and the Green Technology Cluster.
